The Smell of Spring
Here in the north, spring is sometimes long in coming. How sweet it feels that first time early in the season that you open the door and you notice that something feels different. It doesn't feel like winter any more. The sun hits your face, and the smell of the air is different. You know there is a promise of spring.

No Judgment Please
It's easy to judge a person by appearance, and I'm almost always sorry when I do. At a seminar with standing room only, a young man who had body piercings and spiky, multicolored hair was the only person in the room who stood to give his chair to someone else. I admit it. I had been judging his character based on the outer package. It was a lesson in grace and graciousness. I wish I had been the one to stand and give away my chair.

Witnessing Grace
I watched the interaction of an elderly couple that would have been unremarkable, except for the fact that she had the beginnings of dementia. She obviously needed guidance, for she asked often what she should do next, including the simple act of whether or not she should follow her husband when they left the room. The kindness of his patience moved me. He answered her questions simply, with no sign of irritation in his voice, though I imagine he was asked the same questions over and over each day. I witnessed grace.
